Wheatstone Project

In 2009, Apache and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co. (KUFPEC) agreed to join with Chevron to develop the Wheatstone LNG hub. Apache and KUFPEC signed agreements to supply gas from the Julimar and Brunello discoveries and become foundation equity partners in the Chevron-operated Wheatstone facilities.

Wheatstone is the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Australia to support large volumes of third-party supply gas.

Apache has a 65-percent interest in the Julimar and Brunello fields (offshore license WA-356-P) and a 13-percent equity interest in phase one of the Wheatstone Project. As a foundation partner, Apache will also have the opportunity to participate in future expansion of the project, providing additional options for gas commercialization. KUFPEC owns the remaining interest in the offshore license (WA-356-P) and a 7-percent interest in the Wheatstone Project.

The first phase of the Wheatstone Project comprises an offshore central processing platform, a 225-kilometer (140-mile) pipeline to shore and onshore gas liquefaction consisting of two processing trains with a combined production capability of approximately 8.9 million tonnes of LNG per year.

The onshore facilities, located at the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area near Onslow, also include storage and offloading infrastructure and a domestic gas plant.

Apache will design and install the subsea facilities required to supply gas from the Julimar and Brunello fields to the Wheatstone platform.
