Thriving in a mature basin like the U.K. Continental Shelf (UKCS) with offshore assets that are over 40 years old demands a constant drive to raise the bar in all aspects of our business. The North Sea Region, already recognized as a leader in production efficiency, is introducing a new offshore-based leadership position, the Operational Integrity Lead (OIL), across all seven of its assets.

The OIL team will be tasked with delivering improved operational integrity on their respective Apache asset and throughout the wider region. Driving compliance with, and improvement of, the processes, procedures and behaviours that govern Apache's offshore operations is at the heart of this role. An immediate focus of the OIL team is to improve the quality and use of operational procedures and the understanding of the region's Business Management System. The OIL team will also focus on streamlining existing processes and reporting functions so that offshore technicians can more effectively implement these best practices. The end goal will be an improvement in the region's safety and production performance.

The three key elements of operational integrity include processes, procedures and behaviours.

Region Operations Director Mark Hobbs emphasized the importance of the OIL role. "This is a really exciting time for the North Sea Region as the OIL role is the first of its kind," he said. "Ensuring our best and brightest have the opportunity to support others is not only an excellent way to drive improvements in operational integrity, but it's also paramount in the development of the next generation of offshore managers."

North Sea Operational Integrity Team Lead Ian Johnston added that the creation of the OIL team underlines Apache's unwavering commitment to delivering operational excellence. "It's a great opportunity to hand-pick a winning team, so I'm really excited about what the OILs will deliver for our region in 2018 and beyond," he said.

The OIL role will be an ambassador for best practices throughout Apache's operations.

An ability to drive change across multiple disciplines and a capacity to strive for the best answers while acting as an ambassador for Apache's best practice and culture, are a few of many attributes that define the OIL role.

Asset integrity is a function widely understood and established in the industry that deals with the physical aspects of pressure containment. Operational integrity is different in that it deals with improving the consistency of Apache's operation as a whole, focusing specifically on how Apache operates in a compliant manner, i.e., the "health" of its processes and procedures. According to a recent study by the Health & Safety Executive, an independent regulatory body in the United Kingdom, operational integrity is fundamental to the effective management of major accident hazards. Their analysis further showed that all major hydrocarbon releases across the UKCS since 2011 could be attributed to operational integrity deficiencies.

Overall, the introduction of the OIL role demonstrates that by applying a novel solution with a willingness to invest in its people, Apache is committed to raising the bar on operational excellence.
