David Chi, region vice president – Egypt Region and general manager, Apache Egypt, recently attended a groundbreaking ceremony for Apache’s ninth co-educational school in Matrouh in Egypt’s western desert. Chi acknowledged the Bedouins for their cooperation and partnership in donating land for the construction. The Bedouins in turn thanked Apache for continuous support in financing and leading the school-building effort. Chi was also joined by Eng. Alaa Abdelshakour, Matrouh Government General Secretary; Dr. Samir El Niely, Deputy Education Minister for Matrouh; Eng. Khaled Mowafi, Khalda Chairman; Fernando Araujo, Khalda general manager; and several of Apache’s senior management as well as Matrouh Bedouin locals. “As we always give where we live, over 300 students of Matrouh Bedouins have completed their primary education in Apache schools. Apache assists in providing employment opportunities and medical aid for Bedouins,” said Chi. Apache’s “give where we live” philosophy is one in which the company aims to give back to the community and offers support through civic improvements, education and philanthropy for those who are in need. The new school (named Hassan al Harash) is located in El Negila zone, approximately 70 kilometers from Matrouh. It has one classroom for all stages of primary education with the capacity for 40 students. Apache partnered with the Bedouin community in 2008 to build co-educational schools in the area for local children.
