AUSTIN, Texas , Nov. 7 , 2014 – Apache Corporation, along with Texas A&M Forest Service representatives and state officials, will gather today at the Texas Arbor Day celebration to participate in a tree planting ceremony and rally in honor of the Texas Forestry Association’s 100th anniversary. This year’s celebration occurs in November as Texas has officially moved Arbor Day from spring to fall.

The ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. today on the southwest lawn of the Texas Capitol in Austin, followed by a Rally for Trees education fair. Julie Straus, wife of Texas Speaker of the House Joe Straus, will present the Arbor Day address, and a bur oak tree courtesy of Apache will be planted on the Texas Capitol lawn in recognition of the Texas Forestry Association’s 100 years of service. The association has been involved with conservation of Texas’s forest resources since 1914 and today offers programs for volunteers interested in conservation, business, history, education and wildlife.

“Apache has been a valuable partner in our reforestation efforts to plant trees across Texas and a large portion of the United States,” said Paul Johnson, urban forestry program coordinator for Texas A&M Forest Service. “This donation is particularly nice because Apache gave a beautiful bur oak tree that will hopefully be part of the capitol grounds for years to come.”

In addition to the bur oak tree, Apache has distributed nearly 4 million trees in 17 U.S. states since 2005, with nearly 1.5 million of those trees having been planted throughout Texas.

“Apache takes pride in joining organizations across Texas in a commitment to the environment through tree conservation,” Vice President of Governmental Affairs Obie O’Brien said. “Educating residents on the benefits of planting and caring for trees is vital to preserving the communities where we work and live.”

After the Arbor Day celebration, TreeFolks will distribute more than 150 saplings donated by Apache at the Rally for Trees education fair. TreeFolks, which promotes growing Central Texas urban forests, is one of several organizations to receive trees from Apache.

Apache awards trees to nonprofit organizations including cities, counties, schools, parks, universities, youth associations, wildlife refuges and community groups to help improve wildlife habitats, restore storm damage and enhance cities and neighborhoods in areas where the company operates.
