At around 10 p.m. Sunday, May 17, the three- man crew at Apache’s Matagorda Island 519L awoke to banging sounds outside their sleeping quarters. Since the platform is located about 15 miles offshore Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, the noise in the night took the workers by surprise.
