Natural gas-fired generation facilities represent about 20 percent of the U.S. power generation. Because the cost of power generated by natural gas has jumped above the cost of coal-fired power, more utilities are considering building coal-fired generation rather than more gas-fired generation. In addition, the cost of electricity has risen to a level where alternative power (such as wind power) has become economic to build. Greater use of coal or alternative power will reduce market growth opportunities for natural gas.
